Robert awoke with a beer and chocolate taste in his mouth. It could've been worse, he reasoned, as the last time he'd woken up with a hangover, there'd been the less tolerable flavor of throw-up to contend with.

Pete was sleeping beside him. Which was a very, very nice sight to see, especially after their month-and-a-week of separation. But had anything actually been resolved? The night was a fuzzy memory.

He tried to move out from under Pete's arm to reach for his snack drawer, but Pete's voice stopped him.

"You threw everything away last night, remember? Although, it's all in wrappers, so it's probably still okay."

Robert grimaced. "Oh. Right. Except eating out of a trashcan would be a new low, even for me."

Pete shook his head with a sad laugh. "We'd better get up." He started to rise, but Robert stopped him.

"Wait, Pete…are you…are we…I mean, I'm not really sure…"

Gazing out the dorm room window, Pete sighed. "I dunno, Robbie."

It was only by the greatest surge of willpower that Robert was able to keep himself from going straight to that trashcan.

"Are you going to see that guy again?"

Pete shrugged. "I…I don't know."

"Please don't." Robert's voice was barely above a whisper. But he was saying it, wasn't he? What he actually wanted. And he was mostly sober this time.

Pete blinked. "Robbie, I'm just not sure. I'm not sure if you and I can—"

"I'll do anything."

"Not this again." Pete huffed. "I don't want you to lose—"

"I'll meet your mom!"

"What?" Pete shook his head, confused. "You've already met my mom."

"I'll meet her as…as…as your…as your…"

Pete's lips pressed into a disappointed frown. "You can't even say it."

"Boyfriend!" The word finally burst free. "I'll meet her as your boyfriend!"

Boyfriend. What a funny label. It didn't sound like it should mean as much as it did, what with the friend part and all. But this was more. So much more. If he was going to be Pete's boyfriend, it meant obligations. Responsibilities. Not just hiding out in his own head and trying to avoid decisions on what to do next.

Pete sat frozen. "Really? You'd do that? Because when I asked you before…"

Robert threw off the covers, and then yanked them back up when he saw that he was still wearing his clothes from last night, with his stomach hanging out of open jeans. "I know I screwed up. I can't even really explain what was going through my head over winter break, except to say that I was completely miserable without you, and I don't ever want to feel like that again."

Pete looked away for a moment, and when his eyes met Robert's again they were shining. "Thank you for opening up to me. I know that was hard for you, and it really means a lot to me."

Robert took a deep breath. It'd hadn't been so bad, actually. Especially when compared to all the torture not saying it caused.

"So…is that okay? I mean, are we okay?"

Pete rolled towards him, a hand grazing the exposed skin on Robert's waist.
